Last week i opened an Orkut account as i had heard a lot about its networking an socialising capabilities. Being backed by Google a world class company I thought it would be the right place to find interesting people.
Imagine my surprise when i opened my account-
- It abounds in sexually explicit material and nudity which are against the terms of service
- it has a lot of schoolchildren in the age group 10-14 who use it to be in touch with their friends
-there is abundance of soliciting for sex for free and for money with communities which
are so named to attract the perverted or the curious innocent minds.
-being a free site it is very popular among schoolchildren who find something new to
be a part of the peer group.
- there is no age verification even though the minimum age for registration is 18.
-you can get away with sending lewd messages to all and sundry which will remain for everyone to see until you visit your page and delete it.
-reporting abuse is useless as even if the orkut authorities wake up after 6 months
and it take less than a minute to open a new id and start all over again.
More than anything else there are laws in place which forbid explicit sex related material to be shown without proof of age, which are openly flouted by Orkut Members and the authorities do not care a Damn.
So all of us who are disturbed by this menace should use all forums like media, blogs,
and community bulletin boards to make Orkut authorities think about changing the
registration procedure or monitoring the material in a speedy manner.
Most important the Scraps as they are called should not be visible unless the person recieving the scrap approves of it which will close the way to spammers.
Till this happens all peadophiles,free online sex maniacs and predators can have a field day and enjoy orkut
